TheFFTtime-domainscanningtechniquehasbeenwidelyusedindigitalsignalprocessing(DSP)applications.ThetechniqueinvolvestheuseoffastFouriertransform(FFT)toconverttime-domainsignalsintofrequency-domainsignals.ThistechniquehasbeenshowntobeeffectiveindealingwithEMI,asitcanhelptoisolateandidentifythesourcesoftheEMI. ThepurposeofthispaperistoexploretheapplicationoftheFFTtime-domainscanningtechniqueinEMItesting.ThepaperwilldiscusstheprinciplesoftheFFTtime-domainscanningtechnique,itsadvantagesanddisadvantages,anditsapplicationinEMItesting.ThepaperwillalsodiscussthefuturepotentialoftheFFTtime-domainscanningtechniqueinmitigatingtheeffectsofEMI. PrinciplesofFFTTime-DomainScanning TheFFTtime-domainscanningtechniqueinvolvestheuseofanFFT-basedreceivertoscanawiderangeofelectromagneticfrequenciestoidentifythesourcesofEMI.Thereceiverusesanantennatocapturetheelectromagneticsignalsandconvertsthemintotime-domainsignals.Thetime-domainsignalsarethenconvertedintofrequency-domainsignalsusingFFT.TheFFTalgorithmisusedtobreakdownthetime-domainsignalintoitsindividualfrequencycomponents. Thefrequency-domainsignalscanbeanalyzedtoidentifythefrequenciesthatarecausingtheEMI.Oncethefrequencieshavebeenidentified,thereceivercanbetunedtothosefrequencies.ThereceivercanthenisolatethesourceoftheEMIbytakingatime-domainscanatthatfrequency.Thetime-domainscancanrevealtheamplitude,frequency,anddurationoftheEMIsignal.
