Introduction Theuseofhigh-powersemiconductorlasers(HPSLs)hasbeenincreasinginseveralfields,suchastelecommunications,materialprocessing,militaryapplicationsandmedicaltreatments.Theinherentlowbeamqualityoftheselasersduetomulti-modeoperationhasledtoextensiveresearchonimprovingtheirbeamquality.Toovercomethisproblem,severaltechniqueshavebeenproposed,includingsingle-modefibercoupling,phaseconjugationandbeamshaping.However,thesetechniquescanleadtosignificantopticallossesandcomplexityinthesystem.Therefore,thecouplingofhigh-powersemiconductorlaserswithmulti-modefibershasemergedasapotentialsolution. CouplingofHigh-powerSemiconductorLaserswithMulti-modeFibers Amulti-modefiber(MMF)consistsofacore,cladding,andcoatinglayer.Thecorediametercanrangefrom50to1000µm,anditsnumericalaperture(NA)isgenerallylargerthanthatofsingle-modefibers.TheNAofmulti-modefibersallowsforthecouplingoflightfromvarioussourceswithdifferentdivergenceanglesandpracticallymakesthefiberactasanopticalintegrator.High-powersemiconductorlasers,ontheotherhand,haveabeamstructurethatisusuallymulti-mode,highlydivergentandelliptical.Thecouplingofthesebeamsintoamulti-modefiberrequirespropermatchingofthebeampropertieswiththefibercharacteristics.
