Thus,amoreeffectivedielectricwaveguidestructur,suchastheOvermodedwaveguide,wasintroducedinthemid-1980s.TheOvermodedwaveguide,alsoknownastheGuided-WaveOpticalInterconnect,hasbecomeapopularstructurefornanophotonictechnologiessinceitoffersseveraladvantagesincomparisontoconventionalwaveguidedesigns.ThispaperwillprovideanoverviewoftheOvermodedwaveguideandsomeofitsapplications. 2.Overmodedwaveguide TheOvermodedwaveguideisatypeofdielectricwaveguidethathasmultiplemodesofpropagation.Itisdesignedinsuchawaythatitcansupportthepropagationofmorethanonemode,thusallowingthetransmissionofalargeramountofpower.Thewaveguideistypicallyconstructedbysandwichingalowindexmaterial,suchasair,betweentwohighindexmaterials.Thisstructurecreatesawaveguidewithanenlargedcross-sectionalarea,whichcansupportmultiplemodesofpropagation.
