英语新闻模糊语言的语用研究 Abstract AsEnglishhasbecomethedominantlanguageininternationalcommunication,therehasbeenagrowingtrendintheuseofvaguelanguageinEnglishnewsreports.ThisstudyaimstoinvestigatethepragmaticfunctionsofvaguelanguageinEnglishnewsreportsanditsimpactonreaders’interpretationandperceptionofthenews.Basedontheanalysisofnewssamplesandliteraturereview,thisstudyarguesthatvaguelanguageinEnglishnewsreportscancreateapositiveornegativeimpressiononreadersbasedonthecontextandtheintentionbehinditsuse.Moreover,theuseofvaguelanguagecanalsoserveasarhetoricaldevicetomanipulatethereaders’emotionsandopinions.Inconclusion,thisstudysuggeststhatlanguageusersshouldbeawareoftheimpactofvaguelanguageinEnglishnewsreportsanduseitconsciouslyandresponsibly,especiallywhenreportingonsensitiveorcontroversialissues. Introduction Theuseofvaguelanguagehasbeenatopicofinterestinlinguisticsformanydecades.Inrecentyears,therehasbeenanincreaseintheuseofvaguelanguageinthemedia,particularlyinEnglishnewsreports.Themediahasasignificantinfluenceonpeople’sperceptionoftheworldandcurrentevents,shapingtheiropinionsandbeliefs.Therefore,itisessentialtounderstandthepragmaticfunctionsofvaguelanguageinEnglishnewsreportsanditsimpactonreaders’interpretationandperceptionofthenews. VagueLanguageinEnglishNewsReports Vaguelanguageisdefinedaslanguagethatlacksprecision,clarity,orspecificity(Channell,1994).Vaguelanguagecantakedifferentforms,suchashedges,fillers,vagueexpressions,etc.InEnglishnewsreports,vaguelanguagecanbeusedforvariouspragmaticfunctions,suchashedging,mitigation,politeness,ambiguity,andeuphemism.
