Progressinfunctionalgene-basedstudiesofmicrobialcarboncycling Functionalgenesplayacrucialroleinmicrobialcarboncyclingandareresponsibleforthecarbon-fixing,consumption,anddegradationoforganicmatter.Forexample,thegenesencodingribulose-1,5-bisphosphatecarboxylaseandATPcitratelyasearerelatedtocarbonfixationandareessentialforautotrophicgrowthofmicroorganisms.Furthermore,genesinvolvedinhydrocarbondegradationandnitrogenfixationplayanimportantroleinthecarbonandnutrientcycleoftheearth'secosystem(Whiteetal.,2018).Thehigh-throughputsequencingmethodprovidesuswithavaluabletooltoinvestigatethedistribution,composition,anddiversityoffunctionalgenesinmicrobialcommunities.Thus,thefunctionalgene-basedapproachhasbecomeanessentialtoolinanalysingmicrobialcarboncyclingandunderstandingtheecologicalroleofmicrobes.
