Oneofthenaturalenemiesoftheeucalyptusgallwaspistheeucalyptusgallwaspparasitoid(e.g.,Megastigmustransvaalensis),atinywaspthatlaysitseggsinsidethegallsformedbytheeucalyptusgallwasp.However,theecologicalinteractionsbetweentheeucalyptusgallwaspparasitoidandtheeucalyptustreearepoorlyunderstood.Inthisstudy,weinvestigatethechemicalcommunicationbetweentheeucalyptustreeandtheeucalyptusgallwaspparasitoid. Chemicalcommunicationbetweenplantsandinsects Plantsandinsectshaveco-evolvedovermillionsofyears,andasaresult,theyhavedevelopedcomplexchemicalcommunicationsystemsthatenablethemtointeractwitheachother.Plantsproducevolatileorganiccompounds(VOCs)thatcanattractorrepelinsects,anddifferentinsectscandetectandrespondtodifferentVOCsdependingontheirecologicalnicheandlifestyle.Forexample,herbivorousinsectscandetectandrespondtoplantVOCsthatindicatethepresenceoftheirhostplantsorthatsignalthepresenceofdanger,suchaspredatorattacksorpathogeninfections. Ontheotherhand,parasitoidwaspscandetectandrespondtoVOCsthatsignalthepresenceoftheirhosts,suchastheeucalyptusgallwasp.ParasitoidwaspsuseVOCstolocatetheirhosts,assesstheirquality,andavoidcompetitionwithotherparasitoids.However,parasitoidsalsoneedtoavoiddetectionandattacksbytheirhosts,andthus,theyusedifferentchemicalstrategiestoavoidbeingdetected.
