Introduction Theneedforaffordablehousingisasignificantsocialissueinmanycountriesaroundtheworld.Thecostofhousingcontinuestorise,makingitdifficultforlow-incomefamiliestoaccesssuitableaccommodation.Toaddressthisissue,governmentsandnonprofitorganizationshaveimplementedaffordablehousingprogramstoprovideaffordableandsafehousingforthesefamilies.However,thedesignofthesehousingbuildingshasoftenbeencriticizedforbeingtoorigid,generic,andnotresponsivetotheneedsoftheoccupants. Openbuildingtheoryisanapproachtodesignthatemphasizesflexibilityandadaptabilitybyrecognizingthechangingneedsoftheoccupants.Itisadesignapproachthatallowsforthecreationofabasicframeworkthatcanbecustomizedandmodifieddependingontheneedsoftheoccupants.Thisapproachtodesignhasbeensuccessfullyappliedtovariousbuildingtypes,includingresidentialbuildings. Thispaperaimstoexploretheapplicationofopenbuildingtheorytoaffordablehousingdesignandtoproposedesignstrategiesthatenabletheintegrationofcommunity-basedprocesses,userparticipation,andthecustomizationandmodificationofspace.
