Shanghai,ontheotherhand,wasasmallfishingvillageuntilthe19thcentury,whenitbecameoneofChina'streatyportsfollowingtheOpiumWars.Itquicklydevelopedintoamajorinternationalhub,attractingmigrantsfromallovertheworld.AfterthefoundingofthePeople'sRepublicofChinain1949,Shanghai'seconomydeclined,butithasseenaresurgenceinrecentdecadeswiththegovernment'spolicyofeconomicreformandopeningup.Today,itisoneofChina'smostimportantfinancialandcommercialcenters,witharapidlygrowingeconomy.
