Introduction Perviousconcreteisatypeofconcretethatisdesignedtoallowwatertopassthroughit.Thistechnologyisbecomingincreasinglypopularduetoitsenvironmentalbenefits,suchasreducedstormwaterrunoffandimprovedgroundwaterrecharge.However,oneofthemainlimitationsofperviousconcreteisitsrelativelylowstrengthandtoughness.Thislimitsitsusageinapplicationsthatrequirehigherlevelsofload-bearing. Inordertoaddressthislimitation,fiber-reinforcedperviousconcretehasbeenintroduced.Commonfibersthathavebeenusedincludepolypropylene,nylon,andsteel.However,thesefiberscanbeexpensiveandmayimpactthepermeabilityoftheconcrete.Asanalternative,polyethylene(PE)fibershavebeensuggested.PEfibersarerelativelyinexpensiveandcanimprovethestrengthandtoughnessofconcretewithoutnegativelyimpactingitspermeability. ThepurposeofthisstudyistoinvestigatetheimpactofPEfiberonthepropertiesofperviousconcrete.Thisincludesaseriesofteststodeterminethecompressivestrength,splittingtensilestrength,flexuralstrength,andtoughnessofperviousconcretecontainingPEfibers. ExperimentalProgram Materials ThematerialsusedinthisstudyincludedPortlandcement,fineaggregate,coarseaggregate,water,andPEfibers.ThePortlandcementusedwasTypeIcementwithaspecificgravityof3.09andafinenessof2950cm2/g.Thefineaggregateusedwasanaturalsandwithaspecificgravityof2.50andafinenessmodulusof2.86.Thecoarseaggregateusedwasacrushedstonewithamaximumsizeof19mmandaspecificgravityof2.70.Thewaterusedwastapwater.
