Introduction: Intoday'sworld,digitalvideohasbecomeanintegralpartofoureverydaylife.Withtheincreasingdemandforhigh-qualityvideo,videocompressionisessentialastherawvideodataistoolargetobetransmittedorstored.MPEG-4isoneofthemostpopularvideocompressionstandardsusedindigitalvideoapplications.MPEG-4hasmanyadvancedfeaturessuchasobject-basedcoding,scenedescriptionandinteractivecapabilities.Theseadvancedfeaturescomewithsomecomputationalcomplexity.ThemotioncompensationoperationisoneofthekeymodulesinMPEG-4videodecoding,whichrequireshighcomputationalpower. VLSItechnologyhasplayedanimportantroleinvideoprocessingapplications,particularlyintheMPEG-4videodecodingsystem.VLSIprovideshighprocessingspeedandlowpowerconsumption,whichisessentialinreal-timevideodecodingapplications.VLSIcanbedesignedtoperformspecificfunctionsinavideodecodingsystem,whichreducesthecomplexityofthesystemandmakesitmorecost-effective.ThepurposeofthispaperistodesignandimplementamotioncompensationVLSIforMPEG-4videodecodingsystem. DesignMethodology: Thedesignmethodologyusedinthispaperisatop-downapproach.Theoverallsystemarchitecturewasfirstdefined,andthenthefunctionalmodulesweredesignedandimplemented.ThekeyfunctionalmoduleinourdesignisthemotioncompensationVLSI.ThearchitectureofthemotioncompensationVLSIisshowninFigure1. TheVLSIdesignconsistsoffourmajorblocks:Blockmatching,Motioncompensation,Memorymanagement,andControlSignals.TheBlockmat
