Hemeoxygenase-1(HO-1)isastress-responsiveenzymethatcatalysesthedegradationofhemeintocarbonmonoxide(CO),biliverdin,andiron.HO-1hasbeenshowntohaveanti-inflammatory,antioxidant,andanti-apoptoticproperties,andisconsideredtobeacytoprotectiveprotein.However,theregulatoryroleofHO-1incigarettesmoke-inducedBECapoptosisisstillunclear.
