Toovercomethesechallengesandensurereliablecommunication,theuplinkchannel'sestimationandequalizationareofcrucialimportance.ThispaperdiscussesthedesignandimplementationofchannelestimationandequalizationtechniquesfortheuplinkchannelinGSM/EDGEnetworks. ChannelEstimation Channelestimationistheprocessofestimatingthecommunicationchannel'sparameters,includingthechannel'simpulseresponse,carrierfrequencyoffset,andphaseoffset.Channelestimationisperformedatthereceiverendofthecommunicationsystembyexploitingknowntrainingsequencestransmittedbythetransmitter. InGSM/EDGEnetworks,channelestimationisperformedusingtwotypesoftrainingsequences:thetrainingsequencefortheinitialchannelestimationandthetrainingsequenceforthecontinuouschannelestimation.Theinitialchannelestimationisperformedoncepercall,whilethecontinuouschannelestimationisperformedperiodicallyduringthecalltotrackanychangeinthechannel'sparameters. Theinitialchannelestimationisperformedusingatrainingsequencetransmittedbythemobiledevice.Thetrainingsequenceisapseudo-randomsequencewithaknownstructure.Thereceivercorrelatesthereceivedsignalwithalocallygeneratedcopyofthetrainingsequencetoestimatethechannel'sparameters. Thecontinuouschannelestimationisperformedusingthemidamblesequence,whichisashortsequenceinsertedbetweenthetrafficburstsintheuplinktransmission.Themidamblesequencehasaknownstructure,andthereceiverusesittoestimateandtrackthechannel'sparameters. Equalization Equalizationistheprocessofcompensatingforthedistortionintroducedbythetransmissionchannel.IntheuplinkofaGSM/EDGEnetwork,equalizationisperformedatthereceiverendtomitigatetheeffectsofmultipathfadingandinterference.
