Wirelesscommunicationsystemsaresubjecttoenvironmentalfactorswhichcausedegradationofthecommunicationsignal.Thecapacityofawirelesscommunicationsystemreferstothemaximumamountofdatathatthecommunicationsystemcantransferoveragivenchannelband.Thecapacityofawirelesscommunicationchannelisdependentonmanyfactors,includingthesignal-to-noiseratio,bandwidth,andchannelfading. Intraditionalwirelesscommunicationsystems,thecapacityofthecommunicationchannelislimitedbythebandwidthandavailablesignal-to-noiseratio.MIMOsystems,ontheotherhand,canprovidehighercapacitybyexploitingthespatialdimensionofthecommunicationchannel.InMIMOcommunicationsystems,multipleantennastransmitandreceivesignalsthatcaninteractwiththesamecommunicationchannel.Thismulti-antennasystemallowsforsimultaneoustransmissionofmultipledatastreams,increasingthechannelcapacity,andimprovingcommunicationquality. ThecapacityanalysisofMIMOsystemsisbasedontherankofthechannelmatrix.Therankofthechannelmatrixindicatesthenumberofindependentcommunicationpathsinthechannel.ThechannelcapacityofMIMOsystemsdependsonthenumberofantennasatboththetransmitterandthereceiverandtherankofthechannelmatrix.Asthenumberofantennasincreases,therankofthechannelmatrixincreases,andthecommunicationsystem'scapacityincreasesaswell.
