Introduction: Theprojectaimstodesignadual-channelarbitrarywaveformgeneratorthatcanoutputhigh-frequencysignalswithverylowjitterandspectralpurity.Thegeneratorisrequiredtooperateoverafrequencyrangeof1Hzto100MHz,withaminimumverticalresolutionof14bits.Moreover,itmustprovideuserswiththeabilitytogeneratecomplexwaveforms,includingsine,square,triangle,pulse,andarbitrarywaveforms.Asaprerequisite,thegeneratormustutilizetheLXIprotocolforcommunicatingwithotherinstrumentsanddevicesinatestandmeasurementsystem. Designoverview: Thearbitrarywaveformgeneratorisdesignedasatwo-boardstack,withthetopboardhandlingthesignalprocessingandthebottomboardservingasthepowersupplyandcontrolsection.Thesignalprocessingboardincorporatestwohigh-speeddigital-to-analogconverters(DACs)providedbyAnalogDevicesInc.,namelytheAD9154-2500andAD9154-1500models.TheseDACscanconvertdigitalsampleswitharesolutionof14bitstoananalogvoltagesignalatamaximumrateof2.5GS/sand1.5GS/sforeachchannel,respectively.TheDACsaredrivenbyafield-programmablegatearray(FPGA)thatimplementsthesignalprocessingalgorithmsrequiredtogeneratethedesiredwaveform. TheFPGAisprogrammedusingahardwaredescriptionlanguage(HDL),andtheFPGAcodeiscompiledandloadedintotheFPGAusingadevelopmentkit.TheHDLcodeincludesarangeofsignalprocessingfunctions,suchassignalfiltering,signaldelay,signalmodulation,andwaveformgeneration.Agraphicaluserinterface(GUI)hasbeendevelopedtoenableuserstoconfigurethegeneratorsettings,includingthewaveformtype,frequency,amplit
