Theaimofthisresearchistoinvestigatetheeffectofdifferentialflowonthedistributionoffillerparticlesinapolymermatrixduringinjectionmolding.Inthefirststageoftheexperiment,weusedacoinjectionmoldingmachinetoproducespecimensofpolycarbonatereinforcedwithglassfibers.Themachineisequippedwithadifferentialflowcontrolsystemthatallowsustovarytheflowratesofthetwomeltstreamsthatformthecompositematerial. Wepreparedspecimenswithdifferentlevelsofdifferentialflow,rangingfrom0%to50%,andcharacterizedtheirmicrostructureusingscanningelectronmicroscopy.Wefoundthatthedistributionofglassfibersinthematrixchangedsignificantlyasthedifferentialflowincreased.Atlowdifferentialflowlevels,thefiberswereevenlydispersedthroughoutthematrix,whereasathighdifferentialflowlevels,thefiberstendedtoaccumulatenearthesurfaceofthespecimens. Wefurtheranalyzedthemechanicalpropertiesofthespecimensandfoundthattheirtensilestrengthandmodulusincreasedwithincreasingdifferentialflow,whiletheirimpactstrengthdecreased.Theresultssuggestthatdifferentialflowcanbeusedtocontrolthedistributionoffillerparticlesincompositematerials,butitmayalsohaveatrade-offeffectonthemechanicalpropertiesofthematerials. Inthesecondhalfoftheproject,weplantoinvestigatetheimpactofprocessparameterssuchasinjectionspeed,melttemperature,andmoldtemperatureonthedifferentialflowandmicrostructureofthecompositematerials.Wewillalsoperformfiniteelementsimulationstobetterunderstandtheflowbehaviorinsidethemoldcavityduringinjectionmolding. Overall,theinitialresultsofourresearchindicatethatdifferentialflowcanbeapromisingmethodforcontrollingthemicrostructureandmechanicalpropertiesofcompositematerialsduringinjectionmolding.Welookforwardtocontinuingourinvestigationinthecomingmonths.
