RobertBurns RobertBurnswasbornatAlloway,nearAyr,onJanuary25,1759.HisfatherWilliamwasagardenertotheProvostofAyr.RobertwaseducatedbrieflyatJohnMurdoch'sschoolinAllowayandlaterinAyr. FamilyfinancialworriesforcedBurnstoworkasafarmlabourer,anditwaswhilethusoccupiedthathemethisfirstlove,NellyKirkpatrick.Sheinspiredhimtotryhishandatpoetry,asongentitled"O,onceIlov'dabonnielass",settothetuneofatraditionalreel. Burnsworkedatasuccessionoflabouringjobs,includingflaxdressing,andbeganwritingpoetryregularly.Whenhisfatherdiedin1784,BurnsandhisbrotherGilbertrentedafarmnearMauchline. Burnsspreadhisaffectionsfreely,andthenextdecadesaw8illegitimatechildrenborntohimthrough5differentwomen.Oneofthese,JeanArmour,becameMrs.Burnsin1788. ThefirstpublishedworkofpoetrybyRobertBurnswas"Poems,ChieflyintheScottishDialect"whichsawthelightofdayon31July1786.ThiscollectionofversecontainedmanyofBurn'sbestworks,including"ToaMouse",and"TheHolyFair". Thesuccessof"Poems,ChieflyintheScottishDialect"convincedBurnstoabandonplanstoemigratetoJamaica.Buoyedbyhisburgeoningreputationasanunschooled"ploughmanpoet",BurnsmovedtoEdinburghandbecamepartofthethrivingculturalscenethere. Hewasunabletofindapatrontosupporthiswriting,butpublisherJamesJohnsongavehimworkeditingacollectionofScottishfolksongs.Thiswork,titled"TheScotsMusicalMuseum",waspublishedin5volumesoversixteenyears.Burnshimselfcontributedover150songs,including"AuldLangSyne",areworkingofanearlierfolksongofunknownorigin. BurnsandhiswifeJeanmovedtoMauchline,wherein1790heproduced"Tamo'Shanter",whichwasfirstpublishedmerelyasanaccompanimenttoanillustrationofAllowayKirk,inavolumeof"AntiquitiesofScotland".ThegrowingBurnsfamilymovedagain,thistimetoDumfries. Burnscontributed114songsto"ASelectCollectionOfScottishAirs"byGeorgeThomson,buthereceivedverylittlepaymentforhisefforts.In1795,BurnswasinspiredbytheeventsoftheFrenchRevolutiontowrite"Fora'thatanda'that",hiscryforhumanequality.
