ABriefBiography WilliamShakespearewasborntoJohnShakespeareandmotherMaryArdensometimeinlateApril1564inStratford-upon-Avon.Thereisnorecordofhisbirth,buthisbaptismwasrecordedbythechurch,thushisbirthdayisassumedtobethe23ofApril.HisfatherwasaprominentandprosperousaldermaninthetownofStratford-upon-Avon,andwaslatergrantedacoatofarmsbytheCollegeofHeralds.AllthatisknownofShakespeare'syouthisthathepresumablyattendedtheStratfordGrammarSchool,anddidnotproceedtoOxfordorCambridge.ThenextrecordwehaveofhimishismarriagetoAnneHathawayin1582.Thenextyearsheboreadaughterforhim,Susanna,followedbythetwinsJudithandHamnettwoyearslater. SevenyearslaterShakespeareisrecognizedasanactor,poetandplaywright,whenarivalplaywright,RobertGreene,referstohimas"anupstartcrow"inAGroatsworthofWit.Afewyearslaterhejoinedupwithoneofthemostsuccessfulactingtroupe'sinLondon:TheLordChamberlain'sMen.When,in1599,thetroupelosttheleaseofthetheatrewheretheyperformed,(appropriatelycalledTheTheatre)theywerewealthyenoughtobuildtheirowntheatreacrosstheThames,southofLondon,whichtheycalled"TheGlobe."ThenewtheatreopenedinJulyof1599,builtfromthetimbersofTheTheatre,withthemotto"Totusmundusagithistrionem"(Awholeworldofplayers)WhenJamesIcametothethrone(1603)thetroupewasdesignatedbythenewkingastheKing'sMen(orKing'sCompany).TheLettersPatentofthecompanyspecificallychargedShakespeareandeightothers"freelytouseandexercisetheartandfacultyofplayingComedies,Tragedies,Histories,Inerludes,Morals,Pastorals,stageplays...aswellforrecreationofourlovingsubjectsasforoursolaceandpleasure." ShakespeareentertainedthekingandthepeopleforanothertenyearsuntilJune19,1613,whenacanonfiredfromtheroofofthetheatreforagalaperformanceofHenryVIIIsetfiretothethatchroofandburnedthetheatretotheground.Theaudienceignoredthesmokefromtheroofatfirst,beingtoabsorbedintheplay,untiltheflamescaughtthewallsandthefabricofthecurtains.Amazinglytherewerenocasualties,andthenextspringthecompanyhadthetheatre"newbuildedinafarfairermannerthanbefore."AlthoughShakespeareinvestedinth
