Acupuncturehasbecomeoneofthemostpopular–andaccepted–unconventionaltherapieswithintheUnitedStates.Anestimated15millionAmericanshavetriedthisneedletherapy.It'sofferedinmanychronicpainclinics,andiscoveredbysomeinsurersandmanagedheathorganizations.TheWorldHealthOrganizationrecommendsitformorethan40conditionsasdiverseasasthmaandchronicpain.TheFoodandDrugAdministrationregulatesacupunctureneedlesasmedicaldevices,thesameasitdoessurgicaltools.Andin1997,aNationalInstitutesofHealthpanelfoundacupuncturetobeanacceptabletreatmentformanypainconditions,includingfibromyalgiaandgeneralmusculoskeletalpain.And,no,itusuallydoesn'thurtafteraninitial"pinch"orsting.Soit'snosurprisethatsomerheumatologistsaresuggestingacupuncture,alongwithmoreconventionaltreatments,totheirarthritispatients–andafewevengiveacupuncturetreatmentsthemselves. However,Dr.Kassansays,manydoctorsdoremainskeptical."Somerolltheireyesandsaytheycan'tbelieveI'mdoingacupuncture,"hesays."Butrheumatologistsseealotofpatientswithproblemswecan'tdoanythingabout,especiallychronicpain.Weallbecomeveryfrustrated.Andthisiswhereacupuncturemakesitsgreatestimpact:withpatientswhohavefailedconventionaltreatment."
