HistoryofTelevision 1923-CharlesF.JenkinsonJune14madehisfirstexperimentalwirelesstelevisiontransmissionswithamechanicalsystemfromtheNavyradiostationinAnacostiatohisJenkinsLaboratoriesofficeinWashingtonD.C.;VladimirK.Zworykinappliedforapatentonhisiconoscopecathoderaytube. 1924-JohnLogieBairdusedaNipkowdisctomakeexperimentaltransmissionsinLondon;hemadehisfirstpublicdemonstrationMarch25,1925,attheSelfridgesdepartmentstoreonOxfordStreet. 1925-June13Jenkinsmadehis"firstpublicdemonstrationofradiovision"with48linesperinchandsynchronizedsoundovera5-miledistancefromAnacostiatoWashingtonDCtomembersoftheNavyandCommerceDepartment.HewouldbeginbroadcastingonhisfirstTVstationW3xkfivenightsperweekinJuly1928. 1926-InJanuary,JohnLogieBairdinLondonmadeaseconddemonstrationattheSelfridgesdepartmentstoreonOxfordStreet,andbeganoperationofa30-lineTVsystemat5framespersecond.Restoration. 1927-Jan.7PhiloT.Farnsworthappliedforhispatentontheimagedissectortubethatusedcesiumtoreproduceimageselectronically.OnApril7,AT&TtransmittedalongdistancetelevisionimageofHerbertHooverfromitsexperimentalstation3XNinWhippanyNJusinga185-linesystemdevelopedbyHerbertE.Ives;also,EdnaMaeHorner,anoperatorattheChesapeakeandPotomacTelephoneCompany,assistedthetransmissionofHooverandbecamethefirstwomantoappearonU.S.television.OnSept.7,FarnsworthtransmittedhisfirstsuccessfulelectronicTVimagesinSanFrancisco. 1928-May11GEbeganregularTVbroadcastingwitha24-linesystemfromastationthatwouldbecomeWGYinSchenectadyNY;bytheendoftheyear,over15stationswerelicensedforTVbroadcasting;Dr.ErnestAlexandersondevelopedtheOctagonmechanicalTVsetwiththree-inchscreenthatwasmanufacturedandsoldbyGEforhomeuse.InGermany,DenesvonMihalydemonstratedamechanical30-linesystemcalledTelehorwithapicturerateof10framespersecondattheBerlinRadioShow. 1929-June27HerbertE.IvesdemonstratedamechanicalcolorTVsystemof50-linesfromAT&TinNYtoWashingtonDC;ZworykindemonstratedNov.18his120-linesystemofelectronictelevisionwithitsKinescopetubeat24framespersecond. 1930-July30
