ThenewrequirementsapplytheexistingBerryAmendmentpassedin1941toflags.ThatamendmentbanstheDefenseDepartmentfrombuyingfood,clothing,militaryuniforms,fabrics,stainlesssteel,andhandormeasuringtoolsthatarenotgrownorproducedintheUnitedStates,exceptinrareexceptions. ThompsontouredNorthBayIndustriesonTuesday.TheRohnertParkcompanymakesthousandsofflagseachyear,mainlyfortheDepartmentofVeteranAffairs,whichwasalreadyrequiredtosourcememorialflagsmadeintheUnitedStateswithAmerican-onlymaterials. NorthBayIndustriesisavocationalrehabilitationcenterdedicatedtoassistingmentally,physically,anddevelopmentallydisabledadultsthroughparticipationinagency-sponsoredtraining,housing,andemploymentprograms. ThompsonhadvisitedtheRohnertParkfacilitylastyearandfoundoutthatnotallflagspurchasedbythemilitarywerebeingmadeintheUS,whichhesaidpromptedtheneedforthelegislation.
