Introduction: Imagesegmentationistheprocessofdividinganimageintoseveralregionsorsetsofpixelsaccordingtotheirproperties.Itisoneofthemostimportanttasksinimageprocessingandanalysis,andplaysakeyroleinmanyapplications,suchasobjectrecognition,trackingandmeasurement.Thewatershedalgorithmisaclassicalalgorithmforimagesegmentation,whichiswidelyusedinmanyfields,suchasmedicalimageanalysis,remotesensing,andindustrialinspection. Thebasicideaofthewatershedalgorithmistotreattheimageasatopographicsurface,wherethegreylevelofeachpixelrepresentstheheightofthesurface.Theimageissegmentedbydividingthesurfaceintoseveralregionsaccordingtothewatershedlines,whicharethelinesseparatingtheregionsofdifferentheight.Thewatershedalgorithmisapowerfultoolforimagesegmentation,butitsuffersfromtwomajorproblems:over-segmentationandunder-segmentation. Over-segmentationmeansthatthealgorithmproducestoomanyregions,whichmakesthesegmentationresultdifficulttointerpretanduse.Under-segmentationmeansthatthealgorithmproducestoofewregions,whichmeansthatthedetailsintheimagecannotbefullycaptured. Inordertoovercometheseproblems,someimprovedalgorithmshavebeenproposed,suchasthewatershedalgorithmbasedonmarkersandthemorphologicalwatershedalgorithm. Inthewatershedalgorithmbasedonmarkers,theimage
