Throughasystematicexaminationof10publishedstudiesconductedinthepast10years,thisreviewpapersynthesizesarangeoffindingsonthegenericrhetoricalfeaturesandlinguisticcharacteristicsofChineseEnglishabstracts.Firstly,Chineseabstractstendtobemoredescriptivethanargumentative,highlightingtheresearchmotivation,methodology,findings,andimplications,butoftendownplayingthestudy'soriginalcontributiontothediscipline.Secondly,Chinesewriterstendtousecomplexandlongsentences,aswellasnominalizationsandpassivevoiceconstructionstoconveyformalityandobjectivity.Thirdly,acommonproblemliesinthefailuretofollowglobalrhetoricalconventions,suchasusinganinformativetitle,providingclearresearchgaps,andavoidingtheuseofpersonalpronouns. Basedonthecomparativeanalysisoftwosub-corpora,oneconsistingof50randomlyselectedChineseabstractsandtheother50abstractsfromtop-tierinternationaljournalsinthefieldofmanagement,thisstudyfindsthattherearesignificantdifferencesintermsofrhetoricalmoves,suchasstatingtheresearchgap,providingaclearthesisstatement,andcontextualizingtheresearchproblemwithinalargerframework.Chineseabstractsmostlyuseapromotivemovetoemphasizethesignificanceoftheresearch,whereasEnglishabstractsfocusmoreonreportingresearchfindingsandimplications,oftenusingaconclusionmovetorestatethethesisstatement.Intermsoflanguageuse,Englishabstractstendtousesimplersentencestructures,fewernominalizations,andfewerpassivevoiceconstructions.
