runoutofoil.Thehydrogenneededforfuel-cellenginescannoteasilybedepleted.Hydrogen
canbederivedfromvariousplentifulsources,includingnaturalgasandevenwater.Thefact
thatfuel-cellenginesutilizeeasilyavailable,renewableresourcesmakesthemparticularly
attractive.

Second,hydrogen-basedfuelcellsareattractivebecausetheywillsolvemanyoftheworld's
pollutionproblems.Anunavoidableby-productofburningoiliscarbondioxide,andcarbon
dioxideharmstheenvironment.Ontheotherhand,theonlybyproductoffuel-cellenginesis
water.

Third,fuel-cellengineswillsoonbeeconomicallycompetitivebecausepeoplewillspendless
moneytooperateafuel-cellenginethantheywilltooperateaninternal-combustionengine.
Thisistrueforonesimplereason:afuel-cellautomobileisnearlytwiceasefficientinusing
itsfuelasanautomobilepoweredbyaninternal-combustionengineis.Inotherwords,the
fuel-cellpoweredcarrequiresonlyhalfthefuelenergythattheinternal-combustion
poweredcardoestogothesamedistance.
