ThenovelhasbeenwidelyreadinChinaandhasbeentranslatedintomanylanguages.However,thetranslationofthenovelintoEnglishhasbeenasubjectofdebateamongscholarsandreaders.ThepurposeofthisstudyistoanalyzetheEnglishtranslationof“BigBreastsandWideHips”fromtheperspectiveofadaptationselectiontheory. Adaptationselectiontheory: Adaptationselectiontheoryisatheoryoftranslationthatemphasizestheneedtoadaptthesourcetexttothetargetculture.Accordingtothistheory,atranslationissuccessfulifitisabletoconveythemeaningofthesourcetextandatthesametime,isculturallyappropriateforthetargetaudience. Inthecontextofliterarytranslation,adaptationselectiontheorysuggeststhatatranslatorshouldnotonlytranslatethewordsonthepage,butalsotakeintoaccounttheculturalandsocialcontextofthesourcetext.Thismeansthatatranslatorshouldbefamiliarwiththecustoms,traditions,andvaluesofboththesourceandtargetculturesandusethisknowledgetocreateatranslationthatisbothaccurateandculturallyappropriate.
