Insomecasestheworkpieceisstationaryandthecutterisfedtothework.Inmost instancesamultiple-toothcutterisusedsothatthemetalremovalrateishigh,andfrequentlythedesired surfaceisobtainedinasinglepassofthework. Thetoolusedinmillingisknownasamillingcutter.Itusuallyconsistsof acylindricalbodywhichrotatesonitsaxisandcontainsequallyspacedperipheral teeththatintermittentlyengageandcuttheworkpiece.1Insomecasestheteethextendpartwayacrossone orbothEndsofthecylinder. Becausethemillingprincipleprovidesrapidmetalremovalandcanproducegood surfacefinish,itisparticularlywell-suitedformass-productionwork,andexcellentmillingmachines havebeendevelopedforthispurpose.However,veryaccurateandversatilemillingMachinesofa general-purposenaturealsohavebeen developedthatarewidelyusedinjobshopandtoolanddiework.Ashopthatisequippedwithamillingmach ineandanenginelathecanmachinealmostanytypeofproductofsuitablesize. TypesofMillingOperations.Millingoperationscanbeclassifiedintotwobroad categories,eachofwhichhasseveralvariations: 1.Inperipheralmillingasurfaceisgeneratedbyteethlocatedintheperiphery ofthecutterbody;thesurfaceisparallelwiththeaxisofrotationofthecutter. Bothflatandformedsurfacescanbeproducedbythismethod.Thecrosssectionoftheresultingsurface correspondstotheaxialcontourofthecutter.Thisprocedure ofteniscalledslabmilling. 2.Infacemillingthegeneratedflatsurfaceisatrightanglestothecutter axisandisthecombinedresultoftheactionsoftheportionsoftheteethlocated onboththeperipheryandthefaceofthecutter.2Themajorportionofthecutting isdonebytheperipheralportionsoftheteethwiththefaceportionsprovidingafinishingaction.
