Methodology: Themethodofin-situcolumnargraingrowthinvolvestheuseofaseedcrystalofaluminathatisplacedonasubstrate.Theseedcrystalisheatedtoahightemperatureusingafurnace.Thiscausesthealuminatomeltandflowontothesubstrate.Theseedcrystalactsasatemplate,guidingthegrowthofthecolumnargrainsinaspecificdirection. Thegrowthprocesscontinuesuntiltheentiresubstrateiscoveredwithalayerofaluminaceramic.Theresultingmaterialconsistsofhighlyalignedcolumnargrainsthataretoughenedthroughtheadditionofasecondphasethatisgrowninsituduringthegrowthprocess. Results: Thecurrentstudyhassuccessfullygrownaluminaceramicswithin-situcolumnargraingrowth.Theresultsshowedthattheadditionofasecondphaseduringthegrowthprocesssignificantlyimprovedthetoughnessoftheceramics. Themicrostructureanalysisconfirmedthepresenceofhighlyalignedcolumnargrainswiththeaddedsecondphaselocatedinbetweenthegrains.Theadditionofthesecondphasealsoimprovedthematerial'sstrengthandhardness. Conclusion: Theresultsofthecurrentstudydemonstratetheeffectivenessofthein-situcolumnargraingrowthmethodforproducingtoughenedoxideceramics.Furtherresearchisneededtooptimizethegrowthprocessandtoexplorethepotentialforotheroxideceramics. Overall,thesefindingshaveimportantimplicationsforthedevelopmentofnext-generationhigh-performanceceramicsforapplicationsinvariousindustries.
