LinguisticsinAmericastartedattheendofthenineteenthcentury.EnglishwasthedominatinglanguageinAmerica,wheretherewasnosuchatraditionasinEurope.BecausetherewasnowrittenrecordofthelanguagesoftheAmericanIndians,whenthelastspeakerofalanguagedies,thelanguagecanbesaidtohaveperished.Howevertheselanguageswerecharacterizedbyfeaturesofvastdiversityanddifferenceswhicharerarelyfoundinotherpartsoftheworld. BoasworkedasorganizerofasurveyofthemanyindigenouslanguagesofAmericanorthofMexicospecializedintheanthropologyofNorthAmerica.Hewasaself-taughtlinguist,havingneverreceivedanyformaltraininginlinguistics.Heheldthattherewasnoidealtypeorformoflanguages,forhumanlanguageswereendlesslydiverse,hestronglyopposedtotheviewthatlanguageisthesoulofarace,andheprovedthatthestructureandformofalanguagehasnothingtodowiththeevolutionofaraceandthedevelopmentofaculture.Therewereonlydifferencesinlanguagestructure,whilethereisnodifferencebetweenlanguagesintermsofbeingmoreorlessreasonableoradvanced. Boasdiscussedtheframeworkofdescriptivelinguisticsinhisbook.Heheldthatsuchdescriptionsconsistofthreeparts:thesoundoflanguages,thesemanticcategoriesoflinguisticexpression.Heregardedlinguisticsaspartofanthropologyandfailedtoestablishlinguisticsasanindependentbranchofscience.Buthisbasictheory,hisobservation,andhisdescriptivemethodspavedthewayforAmericandescriptivelinguisticsandinfluencedgenerationsoflinguists.
