JamesJoyceJamesAugustineAloysiusJoyce(IrishSéamusSeoighe;2February 1882–13January1941)wasanIrishexpatriatewriter,widely consideredtobeoneofthemostinfluentialwritersofthe20thcentury. HeisbestknownforhislandmarknovelsUlysses(1922)andFinnegans Wake(1939),theshortstorycollectionDubliners(1914)andthe semi-autobiographicalnovelAPortraitoftheArtistasaYoungMan (1916).Althoughhisadultlifewaslargelyspentoutsidethecountry, Joyce'sfictionaluniverseisfirmlyrootedinDublinandprovidethe settingsandmuchofthesubjectmatterforallhisfiction.Inparticular, histempestuousearlyrelationshipwiththeIrishRomanCatholicChurch isreflectedthroughasimilarinnerconflictinhisrecurrentalterego StephenDedalus.Astheresultofhisminuteattentivenesstoapersonal localeandhisself-imposedexileandinfluencethroughoutEurope,Joyce becamesimultaneouslyoneofthemostcosmopolitanandoneofthe mostlocalofallthegreatEnglishlanguagewriters.JamesJoycewasborninDublin.Fromtheageofsix,JoycewaseducatedbyJesuitsatClongowesWoodCollege,atClane,andthenatBelvedereCollegeinDublin(1893-97).LatertheauthorthankedJesuitsforteachinghimtothinkstraight,althoughherejectedtheirreligiousinstructions.Atschoolheoncebrokehisglassesandwasunabletodohislessons.ThisepisodewasrecountedinAPORTRAITOFTHEARTISTASAYOUNGMAN(1916).In1898heenteredtheUniversityCollege,Dublin,wherehefoundhisearlyinspirationsfromtheworksofHenrikIbsen,St.ThomasAquinasandW.B.Yeats.Joyce'sfirstpublicationwasanessayonIbsen'splayWhenWeDeadAwaken.ItappearedinFortnightlyReviewin1900.Atthistimehebeganwritinglyricpoems.Aftergraduationin1902,thetwenty-year-oldJoycewenttoParis,whereheworkedasajournalist,teacherandinotheroccupationsindifficultfinancialconditions.HespentinFranceayear,returningwhenatelegramarrivedsayinghismotherwasdying.Notlongafterherdeath,Joycewastravelingagain.HeleftDublinin1904withNoraBarnacle,achambermaid(theymarriedin1931),stayinginPola,Austria-Hungary,andinTrieste,whichwastheworld’sseventhbusiestport.JoycegaveEnglishlessonsandtalkedaboutsettingupanagencytosellIrishtweed.Re
