Chinesechoreographersturnedtothemesandsubjectmattersthatwouldallowthemtoexplorehumanaspirationsanddisappointments,loveandhate,andespeciallytheinnermindsoftheprotagonists.TheyalsomakeuseofdanceidiomsnotonlyfromclassicalandfolkChinesedancesbutalsofrommoderndance. Incontrast,choreographersawayfrommajormetropolisesinthecountryhavesoughtinspirationfromancientmuralsandsculptures,andcreatednewdanceidiomsandnewdramasbasedonhistoryandlegends.Theefforts,muchtothedelightofforeigntourists,haveresultedinthegrowthofclassicisminthedancecirclesacrossthecounty.Sohowevertouristsgo,theycanoftenbeentertainedwithvarietyshowsordramasbringingalive,forinstance,theterra-cottawarriors,theflyingfairiespainteduponthemuralsofsculptedincaves,orevenConfucius. Meanwhile,anumberofyoungerchoreographershavedevelopedfolkdanceidiomstodepictlivesofruralpeopleinarealisticstyle.Thistrendhascaughtonwithmanyaudiences,especiallyinthenorthernpartofthecountry.
