Abstract:Thispaperpresentsanewcontrollerschemeforphotovoltaic(PV)
powergenerationsystems.TheproposedPVcontrollerschemecontrolsboththe
boostconverterandthebatterychargerbyusingamicrocontrollerinordertoextract
maximumpowerfromthePVarrayandcontrolthechargingprocessofthebattery.
Theobjectiveofthepaperistopresentacosteffectiveboostconverterdesignandan
improvedmaximumpowerpointtrackingalgorithmforthePVsystem.AMATLAB
basedsimulationmodeloftheproposedstandalonePVsystemhasbeendevelopedto
evaluatethefeasibilityofthesysteminensuringmaximumpowerpointoperation.

1.Introduction
Recently,theinstallationofPVgenerationsystemsisrapidlygrowingdueto
concernsrelatedtoenvironment,globalwarming,energysecurity,technology
improvementsanddecreasingcosts.PVgenerationsystemisconsideredasaclean
andenvironmentally-friendlysourceofenergy.ThemainapplicationsofPVsystems
areineitherstandaloneorgridconnectedconfigurations.StandalonePVgeneration
systemsareattractiveasindispensableelectricitysourceforremoteareas.However,
PVgenerationsystemshavetwomajorproblemswhicharerelatedtolowconversion
efficiencyofabout9to12%especiallyinlowirradiationconditionsandtheamount
ofelectricpowergeneratedbyPVarraysvariescontinuouslywithweatherconditions.
Therefore,manyresearchworksaredonetoincreasetheefficiencyoftheenergy
producedfromthePVarrays.
ThesolarcellV-Icharacteristicsisnonlinearandvarieswithirradiationand
temperature.ButthereisauniquepointontheV-IandP-Vcurves,calledasthe
maximumpowerpoint(MPP),atwhichatthispointthePVsystemissaidtooperate
withmaximumefficiencyandproducesitsmaximumpoweroutput.Thelocationof
