Abstract
:Thereareanumberofchallengingtechnicalissuesinminingthefirstseamwithahighcuttingsinglepass
longwallmethodinthickandmultiplegassyseamsofshortintervalsinthewesternregionofChina.Theseissuesin-
cludethestabilityofretainedgateroadsandthequantificationoftheextentanddegreeofdestressedzonesinsurround-
ingstrata.Togainaninsightoftheseissues,atheoreticalandnumericalstudywasundertakenfora4.2mcutting
heightfacetounderstandthepropagationandevolutionoffracturesaroundtheface,tocharacterizethefracturedistri-
bution,andtomapoutthezonesofhighgasconcentrationsinthegoaf.Basedonthesefindings,agroupoflargediam-

eter(=250mm)boreholesdrilledintothezones,insteadofconventionallyexpensivegasdrainagetunnels,aresuc-
cessfullyusedtocapturethegoafgas.Atotalof11．6695millioncubicmetersgasiscapturedwiththeboreholes,ato-
talof677000tonsofcoalisefficientlyextractedwithoutanygasissue,andintegratedcoalandgasextractionisa-
chieved.
