byhim.OnesuchpaintingisknownasattributedtoRembrandtbecauseofitsstyle,
andindeedtherepresentationofthewoman¡¯sfaceisverymuchlikethatofportraits
knowntobebyRembrandt.Butthereareproblemswiththepaintingthatsuggestit
couldnotbeaworkbyRembrandt.First,thereissomethinginconsistentaboutthe
waythewomanintheportraitisdressed.Sheiswearingawhitelinencapofakind
thatonlyservantswouldwear-yetthecoatsheiswearinghasaluxuriousfurcollar
thatnoservantcouldafford.Rembrandt,whowasknownforhisattentiontothedetails
ofhissubjects¡¯clothing,wouldnothavebeenguiltyofsuchaninconsistency.
Second,Rembrandtwasamasterofpaintinglightandshadow,butinthispainting
theseelementsdonotfittogether.Thefaceappearstobeilluminatedbylight
reflectedontoitfrombelow.Butbelowthefaceisthedarkfurcollar,whichwould
absorblightratherthanreflectit.Sothefaceshouldappearpartiallyinshadow-
whichisnothowitappears.Rembrandtwouldneverhavemadesuchanerror.Finally,
examinationofthebackofthepaintingrevealsthatitwaspaintedonapanelmade
ofseveralpiecesofwoodgluedtogether.AlthoughRembrandtoftenpaintedonwood
panels,nopaintingknowntobebyRembrandtusesapanelgluedtogetherinthisway
fromseveralpiecesofwood.Forthesereasonsthepaintingwasremovedfromthe
officialcatalogofRembrandt¡¯spaintingsinthe1930s.
