OpenJournalofModernLinguistics2012.Vol.2,No.1,8-17PublishedOnlineMarch2012inSciRes(http://www.SciRP.org/journal/ojml)http://dx.doi.org/10.4236/ojml.2012.21002AContrastiveStudyofMasterThesisAcknowledgementsbyTaiwaneseandNorthAmericanStudentsStephanieW.ChengGraduateInstituteofTESOL,NationalChiaoTungUniversity,Hsinchu,ChineseTaipeiEmail:scheng@mail.nctu.edu.twReceivedJanuary2,2012;revisedFebruary17,2012;acceptedFebruary26,2012ndththThesisacknowledgementsareawrittenpartgenreinwhichgraduatestudentsexpresstheirgratitudeto-wardsanumberofaddresseesuponcompletionoftheses.Previousstudiesonthesisacknowledgementshavefocusedontheexpressionsofgratitudeortheirgenericstructure.However,socio-culturalvaluesandnormscanshapethewayspeopleexpressthanksandinfluencetherhetoricalstructureofagenrelikethe-sisacknowledgements.Thepresentstudycomparesandcontraststheuseofthankingstrategiesin60the-sisacknowledgementswritteninEnglishbyTaiwaneseandNorthAmericanmasterstudents.ResultsshowthatTaiwanesestudents(TS)usemorethankingstrategiesthanNorthAmericanstudents(NAS);specifically,theyemploymoreexplicitthankingstrategiesbutlessimplicitthankingstrategiesthanNAS.TheyalsousemorecomplexthankingstrategiesbutlesssimplethankingstrategiesthanNAS.Interest-ingly,thetwogroupsvaryinthearrangementofaddresseesandthechoiceofstrategiesforvariousad-dressees,reflectingdifferentculturalperceptionsofexpressinggratitude.Forexample,NASappeartomakeamoreflexiblearrangementofadvisorsandfamilymembersthanTS.Thesesubtledifferencesbe-tweenTSandNASthesisacknowledgementsrevealTaiwaneseandNorthAmericanstudents’embeddedsocio-pragmaticperceptionsofwritingthisgenre.Keywords:Acknowledgements;ThankingStrategies;ExpressionsofGratitude;GenreIntroductionture(Hyland,2004;Hyland&Tse,2004).Veryfewstudieshavecomparedthesisacknowledgementsbynativeandnon-nativestudentsofEnglish.Furthermore,existingresearchonacknowledgementshasrarelytakenasocio-culturalperspectiveinanalyzinghowthanksareexpressed,whoarethanked,andhowandwhythethankedaddresseesarearra
