Computersciencehaslostitsappeal,androbotscanhelpfindit.Evenascomputinghasinvadedeveryaspectofourlives,CSasafieldofstudyisoftenseenasdisconnectedfromthesesamelives.Sotoreestablishtheconnection,theInstituteforPersonalRobotsinEducation(IPRE,www.roboteduca-tion.org)isdevelopingapersonalrobot,software,andcurriculatohelpteachintroductoryCScourses.Imbuedwiththeproperpedagogicalphilosophyandtraining,itcanhelpmakeCSmor-epersonal.
Whoistoblameforthecurrentlackofinterest?Well,me,forone.ButCSeducationhaslongbeena"studentrepellent,"alongwithwhatmightbeviewedasasocialindustrypracticesandunfortunateHollywoodstereotypes.Thoughthereareislandsofhope(suchasCarnegieMellonUniversityandtheGeorgiaInstituteofTechnology),overall,fewerstudentsareenrollinginCScourses,stayingwiththem,ormovingintoindustrybecausewehavewashedthemoutoftheclassroomandthepipeline.
Thenagain,maybethelackofinterestsimplyreflectsthestateoftheU.S.economy.Butifyoulookatthenumbersoverthepast20years,atleastsomeinvariantscan'tbeexplainedawaybyeconomicboomsandbusts.Womenandminoritieshavealwaysbeenunderrepresentedincomputing;theirnumbersintheU.S.peakedalmost25yearsago.Meanwhile,from1998to2004theenrollmentofwomeninCSfell80%,fromabout1.5%toabout0.25%,accordingtotheHigherEducationResearchInstituteattheUniversityofCalifornia,LosAngeles(www.gseis.ucla.edu/heri/heri.html)[4].ThistrendisrelatedtoCS'sreputationforbeingimpersonaltoalltypesofstudents,asreflectedinthefallingenrollmentfiguresacrosstheboard,alsoaccordingtotheHigherEducationResearchInstitute.FollowingrecentresearchinCSgenderissues,wenowknowmuchmoreabouttheweaknessesinCSeducation[2],mostnotablythatstudents'personalvaluesareoftenatoddswiththeenvironmentinCSclassrooms.Forexample,longsolitaryho
