Whenlatchkeychildrenarefunctioningwell,wedon'thearaboutthem.Butwedohearabouttheone-thirdofallcomplaintstochildwelfareagencieswhichinvolvelatchkeychildren.Weknowaboutthe51%whoaredoingpoorlyinschool.Mostteachersbelievethatbeingaloneathomeisthenumberonecauseofschoolfailure.Theafternoonhoursarethepeaktimeforjuvenilecrime.Inthelast11years,juvenilecrimehasincreased48%.TheCarnegieCouncilonAdolescentDevelopmentfoundthat8thgraderswhoarealone11hoursaweekaretwiceaslikelytoabusedrugsasadolescentswhoarebusyafterschool.TheCouncilalsofoundthatteenswhohavesexualintercoursedoitintheafternooninthehomeofboyswhoseparentswork.Unsupervisedchildrenaremorelikelytobecomedepressed,smokecigarettesandmarijuanaanddrinkalcohol.Theyarealsomorelikelytobethevictimsofcrimes.Whenhomealonelatchkeychildrengenerallywatchtelevision,eatsnacks,playwithpetsandfightwithsiblings.
