Worldreportonroadtrafficinjuryprevention Roadtrafficinjuriesareamajorbutneglectedpublichealthchallengethatrequiresconcertedeffortsforeffectiveandsustainableprevention.Ofallthesystemswithwhichpeoplehavetodealeveryday,roadtrafficsystemsarethemostcomplexandthemostdangerous.Worldwide,anestimated1.2millionpeoplearekilledinroadcrasheseachyearandasmanyas50millionareinjured.Projectionsindicatethatthesefigureswillincreasebyabout65%overthenext20yearsunlessthereisnewcommitmenttoprevention.Nevertheless,thetragedybehindthesefiguresattractslessmassmediaattentionthanother,lessfrequenttypesoftragedy. TheWorldreportonroadtrafficinjurypreventionisthefirstmajorreportbeingjointlyissuedbytheWorldHealthOrganization(WHO)andtheWorldBankonthissubject.Itunderscorestheirconcernthatunsaferoadtrafficsystemsareseriouslyharmingglobalpublichealthanddevelopment.Itcontendsthatthelevelofroadtrafficinjuryisunacceptableandthatitislargelyavoidable.
