Decreasedinhibitions Onewayinwhichincreasedcommunicationontheinternetisadvantageousisbyallowingpeople,especiallythosewhoarelesspersonableandoutgoing,tofeellessinhibitedtocommunicate.Thedisinhibitioneffect,termedbyJohnSuler,Ph.D.,ischaracterizedbyelementssuchasanonymity,neutralizingofstatusanddecreasedsocialanxiety. Whenpeoplecan’tbeseenoridentified,sometimestheyaremorewillingtoopenupandsharetruefeelings.Whenthereisapersonal,facetofacerelationshipandpossiblyunequalstatus,peoplehavesomethingtolosebysharingtheirfeelings.Inpersonalrelationships,thereisalevelofvulnerability.Thepersonreceivingtheinformationismorelikelytopassjudgmentandthepersongivingtheinformationismorelikelytogethurt. Communicatingbymeansoftheinternetremovesthislevelofvulnerabilitywhilestillallowingpeopletoexpressthemselves.Ontheotherhand,somesaypeoplecannottrulyemotionallyexpressthemselvesovertheinternet,whichisoneoftheargueddisadvantagesofcommunicationontheinternet. Increasedinteractioninestablishedrelationships Somestudieshavefoundanotheradvantagetobeincreasedinteractionwithalreadyestablishedfriendsandfamilymembers.Theresultsofthesestudiesshowedthatinternetcommunicationwasasupplementtoface-to-faceinteractionswithfriendsandfamilyasopposedtoareplacement.Mostpeoplereportedincreasedintimacyinrelationshipswithclosefriendsandfamilyasaresultoftheinternet.
