Abstract:Basedonaquantitativeandqualitativestudyon46parodiescollectedfrom39ChineseGovernmentWorkReports(GWR)from1978to2016,thepresentstudyattemptstogiveanaccountofparodyuseinpoliticalwritingssuchasGWR,using‘PragmaticMarkednessValue’(PMV)andtheConvergence-EconomyCONTENT ,Variation-EffectivenessandRelevance(CEVER)modelforparodyproposedbyHou(2015)astheresearchtool.Thefindingsareasfollows:FINDINGS (1)ParodiesinGWRareseenmoreandmoreoftenover39years.(2)ParodyinGWRhasachievedhigherandhigherPMVsincethereformandopening-up,whichmeansparodiesinGWRaremoreandmorewell-formed.(3)Offourtypesofparody(wordparody,phraseparody,sentenceparody,paragraphparody),wordparodyisusedmuchmoreoftenthanotherthreeinGWR.(4)Onceusedforthefirsttime,theparodierinGWRtendstobemimeticallyused,moreandmoreunmarked.(5)Thereasontoexplaintheincreasinguseofparodyin39GWRisthatthespeakers/writersaretryingtogain‘markedeffects’and‘communicativevalue’byusingparodiesmorefrequently.
